Trio of Premier League games postponed for second week

In the continued wake of The Queen’s passing, the Premier League postponed more games for the upcoming weekend. Others look set to roll on as scheduled.

This past weekend, all games in the English Football League did not happen. The period of national mourning in the United Kingdom prevented any game, regardless of league, from happening.

However, the EFL announced that it would pick up its schedule on Tuesday. With many Premier League teams occupied with European competition, that meant continuing the schedule on Friday, Sep. 17. Yet, this latest news coming out of the Premier League demonstrates that there are more postponements in the wake of The Queen’s passing.

This upcoming weekend, three games are postponed. Those games are Saturday’s Brighton clash with Crystal Palace. Then, on Sunday, Manchester United’s game against Leeds, as well as the highly anticipated Chelsea–Liverpool fixture, are postponed.

Three Premier League games postponed

On the bright side, seven games are going on as scheduled. However, the three games postponed do not show much correlation.

The general understanding for why these games are postponed is the lack of police force available. Many officials and authorities have responsibilities in regards to The Queen’s funeral procession, slated for Monday, Sep. 19. With that taking place at Westminster Abbey in London, Chelsea is just minutes from there. However, games in Manchester and Brighton are not exactly close. Moreover, Spurs and Brentford, two more London clubs, are both also at home on the weekend. However, there is no change to their schedule.

The three postponed Premier League games follow suit of Arsenal, which postponed its Europa League tie with PSV Eindhoven on Thursday into a date to be determined.
