Newcastle ‘in talks’ over new deal as Toon talent breaks into first-team squad

As reported by The Chronicle, Newcastle are in talks to hand Alex Murphy a contract extension following his rise to the first team this season.

Murphy signed from Galway two years ago and impressed Eddie Howe during their pre-season tour of the US, prompting the boss to include him in his first-team squad, where he featured from the bench in Saturday’s 5-1 win over Sheffield United.

The 19-year-old has made two appearances in the Premier League so far, but with injuries at the back still a big issue for the team we could yet see more of the defender before the season’s close.

Murphy’s contract is set to expire in 2025 but Newcastle are hoping that he will extend his deal beyond that, especially after changing agency to Wasserman; the same group that represents Howe, Harvey Barnes and Tino Livramento.

This news comes after it was revealed that a number of youth players are expected to be released in the summer including the likes of Amadou Diallo and Michael Ndweni who both also featured in the first team this season.
