Steve Bruce: Two players turned me down at Newcastle to “stay in London”

Former Newcastle boss Steve Bruce has revealed how he tried to sign both Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise during his time on Tyneside – but that the Crystal Palace pair preferred to stay in London.

Olise has racked up an impressive 10 goals and six assists in just 19 Premier League games and has been linked with a summer move to St James’ Park in recent weeks, while Eze was reportedly watched by Toon scouts during his time at QPR.

On the Palace duo, Bruce told Betway: “Ironically, I tried to take the two of them to Newcastle and they both decided that they wanted to stay in London.”

A few years on, I’m sure most Newcastle fans would love to see the pair on Tyneside. Of course, things could have worked out very differently had they taken the opportunity to work under Bruce during the Mike Ashley days.

Under Eddie Howe, however, you do wonder how much of a difference someone like Olise would be on the right side of the attack alongside Gordon and Isak. It would make for one of the most exciting front threes in the league, although it seems we’ll have competition from several Premier League sides, including Man Utd.
