Barcelona miss out on €60 million+ additional revenue following Champions League exit

According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona missed out on a chance to pocket €62.5 million following their 1-4 defeat to PSG in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final. 

This consisted of €50 million from the newly established Club World Cup, along with an additional €12.5 million for qualifying for the semi-finals of the continental championship.

Barcelona’s Champions League journey came to an end last night and within the club, there is a prevailing sense that several controversial calls during the match worked in PSG’s favour.

Nevertheless, following the defeat, club president Joan Laporta visited the locker room to offer support and encouragement to the team and staff. His tone was supportive, devoid of reproach, and he took the time to listen attentively.

The president went to meet the players despite knowing that the club endured a substantial financial loss following the defeat.

While Barcelona managed to stick to its budget by making it to the quarterfinals, they won’t be able to boost their earnings further by progressing to the semifinals.

It is to be noted that UEFA ensures Barcelona a solid €81.15 million for their sporting performance, and they can expect to tack on an additional €15 million from the market pool.

Interestingly, by not qualifying for the next round, Barcelona missed out on around €20 million in additional earnings.

In dire need of additional revenue, Barcelona could have earned approximately €12.5 million from UEFA for advancing to the semifinals, with a bit more coming from the market pool (sponsors and TV rights), and an extra six million from another game at Montjuïc.

While the exact distribution for Spanish teams from the market pool was yet to be determined, which could have added around €15 million more, Barcelona had already amassed €81.15 million from their sporting…
