Turkish FA hits Trabzonspor with 6-match closed stadium sanction

April 4 – The Turkish Football Federation has ordered Trabzonspor to play their next six home matches in front of empty stands following the riots after the Super Lig match between Trabzonspor and Fenerbahce last month.

Fenerbahce won the game 3-2 after which Trabzonspor fans stormed the pitch, attacking security forces and players.

Trabzonspor were also fined 3 million Turkish lira ($94,000), while coach Egemen Korkmaz, has been suspended for one match.

Fenerbahçe players İrfan Can Eğribayat and Jayden Oosterwolde have also been suspended for one match and fined. Fenerbahçe defender Bright Osayi-Samuel, who punched a Trabzon fan in self-defense, was not punished.

Immediately after the riots of the match in Trabzon, the management of Fenerbahçe threatened to withdraw the team from participation in the championship of Turkey. Fenerbahce members have voted against a proposal to withdraw from the Turkish Super Lig.

Fenerbahce, who have 19 league titles and are the second most successful team in Turkey, are second in the table after 30 games – five points behind leaders Galatasaray, who have a game in hand.
