Triple blow for Toon as £20m man suffers setback ahead of 2024/25 season

Speaking after Newcastle’s 2-0 win against Hull yesterday, Eddie Howe confirmed that Calllum Wilson will miss out on the remainder of pre-season and our Premier League opener against Southampton in three weeks time.

Wilson, who has not played for the club since a nine minute cameo on the final day of last season, recently underwent treatment for a “bulge in his disc” in his back.

This isn’t just a blow for pre-season and our opening game on August 17th, but could scupper any potential summer move now he’s lost his place to Alexander Isak and entered the final 12 months of his contract on Tyneside.

“Callum had an injection in his back…so he needed an operation and I think he may miss the start of the season,” Howe said.

Despite losing yet another player to injury, Howe remained optimistic about the upcoming season, adding: “Thankfully there are not too many games at the start, we’re week to week so hopefully he won’t miss too many.”

Newcastle are set to start the 2024/25 season against Southampton, Bournemouth and Spurs, before the first international break of the campaign in early September.

There’s currently no timeline on Wilson’s return, though many will be keen to avoid a repeat of last season, when the 32-year-old missed a staggering 25 games through injury and illness across all competitions.
