Iraola hoping to cause upset at Anfield in ‘open game’

Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola says the Cherries will face a tough task against Liverpool in the Premier League this weekend.

Speaking ahead of the game, Iraola acknowledged that Liverpool’s midweek Champions League clash might offer a slight edge but stressed the quality of Arne Slot’s side and their ability to play in multiple competitions.

“Normally not playing [midweek] is an advantage. But Liverpool are top athletes and we are probably going to face the most physical team in the Premier League,” Iraola said.

“We have to be ready for a challenging game physically, but I think we can match them in this sense.”

“I expect an open game. They are very good in transitions and we are also. There is normally space.

“We will have to defend very difficult duels, and I hope we can keep this level [from Chelsea] of defending one v ones.”

Lewis Cook could potentially make his 200th league appearance for the club at the weekend and the boss praised his consistency and importance to the team.

“He continues to improve. He was very solid last season; he’s a very reliable player. Even in games where we feel that he’s not sharp on the ball, his work-rate gives you a lot.

“These kinds of players give you some assurance when you are preparing for a game. I hope he can continue and become even better.”

Promising signs

Iraola also addressed Evanilson’s recent penalty miss against Chelsea, which was a turning point in last week’s loss.

He offered support for the player and reflected on the mental challenges of missing from the spot.
