Source close to Eddie Howe reveals Elliot Anderson reality – Nottingham Forest can’t believe their luck

A big piece has emerged today from The Telegraph’s John Percy, who takes a closer look at Elliot Anderson’s move to Nottingham Forest and Newcastle’s stance on his sudden exit earlier this summer.

One line features some comments from a ‘source close to Eddie Howe’, who reveals that our decision to sell the midfielder is still considered “one of the most difficult decisions he has ever had to make as a manager.”

The Telegraph insists that Howe was hugely reluctant to part with our versatile Academy graduate, but realised it was that or face a heft points deduction as we ended June’s PSR deadline in desperate need of sales.

Percy reports that Forest had shown interest in Anderson earlier in the window, but any approach was quickly rebuffed until they learnt about our PSR situation and sudden need to sell. As a result, they not only signed a key target but landed him for just £15m, with a big portion of the ‘£35m deal’ seeing us pay ‘over £20m’ for Odysseas Vlachodimos to ensure both clubs scratched each others backs from a PSR perspective.

Considering all of the above and the price they paid, Forest will be delighted with that piece of business, especially when he’s taken no time to impress, winning their player of the month award for August after a string of all-action displays.

His man of the match display in a recent clash with Wolves also saw singled out on Match of the Day, where Danny Murphy said: “I like him a lot. I liked him the times I saw him in a Newcastle shirt. He is all-action.

“He has a bit of everything. He loves to defend, he gets his foot in, he does his work, great on set plays, took free-kicks as well, great runs into the box, has got nice feet. Just a dynamic performance. He had a really good game and looks like a good signing.”

At the end of the day, it was a necessary evil that we sold Anderson to avoid a PSR breach – I’m sure most of us agree that it’s better he went than a star man such as…
