Marc Guehi update – Good and bad news after chaotic night for Crystal Palace

The Marc Guehi saga took another twist last night, adding to the tedious transfer saga that has dragged on now for almost the entire month of August.

Starting with the ‘bad news’, not only did Guehi play the full 90 in their 4-0 Carabao Cup win over Norwich, the Eagles suffered another setback at centre-back just 10 minutes, with £14m signing Chadi Riad forced off with a suspected knee ligament injury.

The fact Guehi played was a clear sign that we’re yet to strike a deal with Palace (and also leaves him cut-tied) and the loss of Riad just a few days after they sold Joachim Andersen to Fulham leaves them extremely short at centre-back and could impact their stance on another sale.

Now for the ‘good news’, which comes from Craig Hope. Before The Mail’s North East reporter appeared on Sky Sports News late last night, he said ‘still expecting Guehi to get done’ when asked for an update by Toon fans on Twitter.

This suggests Guehi’s appearance last night and the fact he’s now cup-tied has not impacted his potential move to St James’ Park. He and colleague Sami Mokbel (The Mail) remain confident he’ll sign, although we have heard this for weeks and here we are with just three days left to do business.
