Barcelona walked away with all three points from Estadio de Vallecas last night as they defeated Rayo Vallecano 2-1.
Having gone behind early in the game, the Catalans mounted a spirited fightback in the second period as goals from Pedri and debutant Dani Olmo sealed the comeback victory.
The scoreline could have been even more attractive for Barcelona as Robert Lewandowski had a goal ruled out at 1-1 by the referee after VAR intervention due to a foul by Jules Kounde on Pep Chavarria in the buildup.
What happened?
Around 12 minutes after Barcelona had equalised through Pedri, they seemed to have taken the lead as Lewandowski bundled the ball into the back from close range rebound after Lamine Yamal’s shot had been saved.
However, the VAR Jorge Figueroa Vazquez decided to intervene in matters and instructed the referee Cesar Soto Grado to go to the pitchside monitor and take a look at a possible infraction from Kounde during the buildup as he appeared to have stepped on Chavarria.
After reviewing the play, the referee ruled that Kounde had indeed fouled Chavarria in the buildup and ruled out the goal.
Audio released
Now, the RFEF has released the audio clipping of the conversation that took place between the VAR and the on-field referee which led to the ruling out of Lewandowski’s goal.

Soon after the striker scored, VAR Figueroa Vazquez radioed referee Soto Grado and asked him to review the play, saying:
“I’m going to recommend that you come to the screen because there is a foul, for you to see, at the start of the play. You can judge whether the foot is important enough.”
Upon looking at the images being shown on the screen, Soto Grado decided to overrule the goal, as he told the VAR:
