Barcelona defender will be available against Valencia despite suspension scare

Barcelona can breathe a sigh of relief as Eric Garcia will be available for the team’s opening La Liga fixture against Valencia, reports Mundo Deportivo. 

This news comes despite Garcia having received his fifth yellow card last season while on loan at Girona during their match against Granada. 

Initially, there were concerns that this yellow card might result in a suspension, but it has now been confirmed that Garcia will be eligible to play.

What does the rule say?

The key to understanding this situation lies in the RFEF (Royal Spanish Football Federation) Disciplinary Code, specifically in Article 56, which governs the enforcement of sanctions. 

According to this article, when a competition ends or a team is eliminated, any pending suspensions from yellow or red cards must be served in the following season. 

This rule applies even if the player moves to a different category, division, or group, ensuring that disciplinary actions are carried out regardless of the player’s circumstances.

However, the rules aren’t as straightforward as they seem. While Article 56 clearly states that suspensions carry over to the next season, it primarily deals with expulsions due to red cards or double yellow cards. 

Expulsions are treated with a strict hand, and any pending suspension from the previous season must be served at the start of the new season. 

This means that if Garcia had been sent off with a red card in that final game for Girona, he would have faced an automatic suspension in Barcelona’s opening La Liga match.

But the situation with yellow cards is different, and this is where Article 119 of the RFEF Disciplinary Code comes into play. This article specifically addresses the accumulation of yellow cards, which is treated separately from expulsions.
