Hansi Flick’s plan if Barcelona fail to sign top defensive target – report

Joao Cancelo may not enter the top of Barcelona’s wishlist this summer, but he is a priority target in the defensive unit nonetheless.

Despite a rather mixed end to his loan spell at Barcelona this past season, the club remain keen on retaining his services, knowing his experience and versatility should add some much-needed depth to the defensive ranks.

Barcelona won’t go all out for Cancelo

A recent report from Mundo Deportivo has offered a fresh update on Barcelona’s pursuit of Joao Cancelo, suggesting the club won’t go all out for the Portuguese international.

As per the report, Barça won’t do ‘anything crazy’ to attain the services of Cancelo, who is more than likely to leave Manchester City this summer.

The Premier League giants, though, are not too keen on another loan and are actively looking for a permanent sale.

This puts Barça at a disadvantage as the Catalans are not in a position to sign Cancelo on a permanent deal this summer.

How will Flick cope with Cancelo’s loss?

In the event Barcelona fail to secure the services of Joao Cancelo this summer, Hansi Flick has thought out a plan for the right-back position.

As per the report, the German tactician is more than willing to put his faith in Julian Araujo, Hector Fort and Jules Kounde, in case the club fail to re-sign Cancelo this summer.

It must be noted that Araujo is coming on the back of a stellar loan spell at Las Palmas, whereas Fort was one of the club’s most impressive youngsters last season.

That said, it would perhaps be wiser for Barcelona to still go after a more recognised right-back, merely as a precaution, knowing there is a substantial chance both Fort and Araujo may fail to deliver next season.
