Ajax register ‘genuine interest’ in signing former Barcelona captain – Romano

Sergi Roberto will go down as one of La Masia’s most versatile graduates in history, and his time at Barcelona is a testament to the same.

After all, the player started as a midfielder before switching to the right-back position when the club was in dire need of cover in the department. Throughout his career, he constantly switched his role based on the team’s requirements.

His association with the club is now set to come to an end. As reported before, Hansi Flick never had a place for Roberto in his plans, and it is unlikely that Barcelona will propose a renewal.

Interest from the Netherlands

Roberto is currently without a club after his contract with Barcelona expired last month. The former captain is now deciding the next step in his career, and Fabrizio Romano provides an update on the same.

Of them, Ajax have a serious interest in signing the veteran. It has been said that they have approached Roberto in recent days, but the player will assess his options and make a decision in the coming days.

Premier League interest

Having experienced the highs and the lows of Spanish football, Roberto is looking to expand his horizons by moving to a different league.

The Premier League, in particular, is said to interest the player as he wishes to experience the football culture in England. Interest from Aston Villa and West Ham thus arrives as music to his ears.

For now, though, it remains to be seen if the Ajax option convinces the former captain as much as options in the Premier League. At 32 years of age, it could well be the final big move of his career.
