Sky Sports in Germany have rubbished suggestions that Serge Gnabry could be on his way to Newcastle this summer.
In an update that won’t come as a shock to many Toon fans, Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg reports that talk of a £40m move to Tyneside is ‘wide of the mark’ as the former Arsenal winger has no intention of leaving Bayern Munich this summer, despite ‘interest’ from Newcastle.
The link – which emerged from The Mirror on Sunday – never seemed particularly likely when you consider his age, recent injury history and huge wage demands.
Elsewhere, another Leeds United starlet is apparently on Newcastle United’s radar this summer. After extensive links with Crysencio Summerville all window, Wilfried Gnonto is the now next player to be linked alongside fellow Italian Federico Gatti.
In a slightly dubious ‘exclusive’ from TEAMtalk, it’s claimed Newcastle have joined Everton in the race for Gnonto, who is thought to be available for around £25m after Leeds failed to win promotion back to the Premier League.
The 20-year-old scored nine goals in 26 games last season and has been capped 13 times by Italy. He’s a versatile attacker with plenty of potential who can play down either flank, but I’m expecting us to aim higher after attempting to sign the likes of Michael Olise just a few weeks ago…unless we plan to sign two right-wingers in light of Minteh’s move to Brighton and Almiron’s likely sale?
Staying on the subject of Toon-linked Italians, Tuttosport report that Newcastle are one of three Premier League clubs taking a close look at Juventus centre-back Federico Gatti.
The Italian paper states that Newcastle are the ‘most interested’ of the three clubs, but it’s currently unclear if the player himself would welcome a summer switch to St James’ Park. Like Gnonto, however, I wonder whether this is REALLY an option we’re pursuing as we approach the final six weeks of the summer window.
