July 16 – More than 5.8 million visitors had entered the ten Fan Zones in the Euro 2024 host cities in Germany before the final on Sunday that saw Spain overcome England 2-1.
With the tournament over the number count has started and is showing record figures across pretty much every metric.
The highest day’s attendance at fan zones, prior to the final, was when hosts Germany played Spain in the quarter-finals, with a total of 547,000 visitors across the Fan Zones
As well as Fan Zones, many host cities organised fan walks to the stadiums which proved popular and added to the pre-match festival atmosphere. Estimates reckon more than 400,000 fans took part in fan walks from dedicated fan meeting points to the stadiums.
That number is close to 20% (ahead of the final) of the roughly 2.6 million spectators have attended the 50 matches played. Fans attended from more than 190 countries.
More than 387,000 Fans First tickets (available from €30 for group stage matches) were sold, contributing to over 1.1 million tickets purchased in the Fans First and category 3 (available from €60 for group games) ranges.
While the fans packed stadia, those at home set new TV audiences across the continent in the countries with participating teams. UEFA said that overall the tournament will achieve a global cumulative audience in excess of 5 billion viewers.
Social media – ubiquitous, unavoidable and now an important component of information strategies at major tournaments – saw a “strong” increase on UEFA EURO 2020 with UEFA saying its official EURO channels on TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X and WhatsApp added more than 14 million new followers. The channels had reached 335 million engagements and 2.8 billion video views.
Elsewhere core programmes like sustainable transport also scored significant numbers making 2024 “the most sustainable EURO of all time”. More than 280,000 fans purchased the dedicated Deutsche Bahn tickets for fans,…
