Barcelona yet to make an offer for 28-year-old midfielder, player waiting for approach

While Nico Williams is the top target for FC Barcelona this summer, they are also in the market for a new midfielder.

Joshua Kimmich of Bayern Munich is the preferred option but salary could be an issue and as such, Mikel Merino of Real Sociedad is seen as a very viable and solid alternative.

Barcelona have not made an offer yet

Indeed, Merino is a player that is understood to convince the entire sporting department and the coaches at Barcelona.

However, according to Mundo Deportivo, the Catalan heavyweights are yet to make an offer for the 28-year-old midfield ace.

Merino is coming on the back of a successful campaign at the UEFA Euro 2024 with Spain, during which he even scored a crucial goal against Germany.

The ex-Newcastle United man’s contract at Sociedad expires in 2025 and a renewal is out of question, leaving the door open for an exit.

Barcelona, though, have not made an offer yet and are waiting to return to the 1:1 ruling before they can make their move.

The Euros were another reason why the Catalans had not launched an attempt, but with the tournament now over things could start moving.

Merino, for his part, is waiting for Barcelona as per the report, indicating that the player would be willing to make the jump to the Catalan capital despite interest from Arsenal.

His father, Miguel Merino, had insisted that the midfielder would not discuss his future until the Euros were over and now that is done, the 28-year-old has not set any particular deadline to decide his next move.

Regarding the possibility of a transfer to Barcelona, Merino had recently said: “From the first moment I set foot in a professional team, I have always said that any rumour or link I have with another team, I take it as a positive thing for the club I am at.
