Barcelona rule out hijack attempt for pivot target as 22-year-old ace remains priority

Before the season drew to a close, Barcelona’s primary focus was to address their glaring problems in the defensive midfield position.

Despite maintaining their pursuit of a physically competent midfielder, the Catalan giants are currently shifting their attention towards Athletic Club speedster Nico Williams.

And it appears Amadou Onana, one of the defensive midfielder that piqued their interest, is no longer within reach.

Barcelona value Onana but abandons pursuit

Indeed, according to Fabrizio Romano Barcelona holds Amadou Onana in high regard for his talents and ability to win duels all over the pitch.

However, they have decided against submitting a bid for the midfielder, given reports indicating his imminent signing with Aston Villa.

Onana enjoyed a terrific campaign with Everton and also showcased his talents on the international stage with Belgium at the Euros.

However, he was highly sought after, and Barcelona faced a considerable challenge in meeting Everton’s steep asking price.

The report goes on to add that Barcelona’s current strategy revolves entirely around securing Nico Williams, whom they view as their top priority to strengthen the squad.

The Basque winger has been in fantastic form with the Spanish national team and his impressive exploits at the Euros have led Barcelona to fully focus on acquiring his signature.

In fact, reports have even argued that Nico Williams has already started looking for a house in Castelldefels.

Once the Euros concludes, the Catalan giants intend to activate his €58 million release clause.

Afterward, a more concrete approach toward a defensive midfielder will be launched, given that the club still deems a signing in midfield of great importance.
