Barcelona priority transfer target responds to Laporta’s comments

Nico Williams has emerged as Barcelona’s priority summer target in the ongoing transfer window, a position justified by his form at the Euros.

The 22-year-old winger has been exceptional for Spain’s national team throughout the tournament and has formed a wonderful partnership with Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal.

His release clause stands at under €60 million, a bargain fee for a player of his quality. Given Barcelona’s uncertain financial situation, questions arose about their ability to sign him. However, La Liga president Javier Tebas confirmed earlier this week that it was a possibility.

What has Laporta said?

Earlier this month, Barcelona president Joan Laporta made an open statement confirming that he liked Nico Williams and that the club could afford to sign him.

“Obviously I like him, and I like him a lot. But here we have to let those who have the responsibility work, and Deco is working to make the additions that have been discussed with Flick, and I hope to have good news,” Laporta had said.

“Today, yes we can afford to sign Nico Williams,” he added.

Responding to the comments made by the Barcelona president, Nico insisted that he is not thinking about the outside noise and is focused on winning the Euros.

“Nothing. I am 100% focused on the Euro. Everything that comes from outside does not interest me. I’m just focused on this,” he said via El Pais, playing down all talks of a transfer while the tournament is underway.

The Athletic Club winger was then asked to comment on the significant five-year difference between him and Lamine Yamal, with both players being among the youngest in the Spanish squad.

“For his age, he’s very mature. He doesn’t look like he’s 17. Everything came to him so quickly: football, his family was in a bit of a complicated situation… it makes you mature early,” he said.
