Fabian Schar sets new world record

Fabian Schar has set a new record following Switzerland’s shootout exit to England in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024.

After picking up a yellow card in Saturday’s clash with the Three Lions, he’s now been carded EIGHT times in major international tournaments – a new record in world football as no player has ever been booked more.

The 32-year-old has now played in three European Championships (Euro 2016, 2020 and 2024) and three World Cups (2014, 2018 and 2022), picking up eight bookings across 20 appearances in the two competitions.

Schar was cautioned in the first half of Saturday’s game after bringing down Jude Bellingham as he looked to break on the counter and has picked up 102 bookings and two red cards in 419 club appearances.

Speaking on social media after their shootout exit to England over the weekend, he said: ‘It is still hard to find the right words. Sometimes football can be cruel and it will take a few days to get over it. But I am also so proud of this team and what we achieved!! See you soon.’
