Newcastle name Paul Mitchell as new sporting director

Premier League side Newcastle have appointed Paul Mitchell as their new sporting director.

The Magpies have moved swiftly on from Dan Ashworth – who departed for Manchester United earlier in the week – and recruited the former Monaco, RB Leipzig and Tottenham man.

Speaking on the club website, Mitchell said: “It’s with immense pride that I accept the responsibility of being Newcastle United’s new sporting director.

“I’ve seen the recent growth and ambition of the club. This, plus the amazing fan base, made the decision to join an easy one.

“I can’t wait to get started and help continue the organisation’s growth and long-term competitiveness in all areas of elite football performance.”

There is a lot of work to do at Newcastle this summer and he will already be sitting on some cash following the sales of Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson last week.

Reports suggest Newcastle wish to strengthen in both attack and defence, despite already adding Lloyd Kelly on a free transfer.

They missed out on a Champions League place last term but are keen to return to Europe’s elite competition.

And with the help of Mitchell, they will be in a much better place to challenge next season without any Thursday night matches in 2024-25.

Darren Eales, Newcastle United’s CEO, added: “We are delighted to welcome Paul to Newcastle United.

“He brings a successful track record and wealth of experience to the club.

“His extensive and diverse experience in football leadership, cultural change and recruitment mean he is the ideal person to lead our sporting directorate.

“We look forward to working with Paul and supporting him in our pursuit of long-term, sustainable success.”
