John Ruddy has been speaking to NUFC TV following his surprise arrival at Newcastle United on Monday, discussing how his move to St James’ Park came about.
After agreeing a one-year deal and signing on a free transfer after leaving Birmingham, the 37-year-old revealed that the club were in the market for an “experience goalkeeper” to help with “setting standards and cultures on a daily basis”, also “making sure training is at a good tempo.”
His comments suggest he is very much arriving to help off the field and during training sessions, with the former Norwich and Wolves stopper set to become Loris Karius’ replacement as our third-choice option behind Nick Pope and fellow new recruit Odysseas Vlachodimos.

Speaking to the club’s official website on his arrival, Eddie Howe had this to say on Ruddy’s arrival:
“I’m pleased to welcome John to Newcastle United. He has a huge amount of experience and adds a level of support and competition that we need.
“As well as his abilities on the pitch, he has a strong mentality and he is a leader, which will only benefit the group. I’m looking forward to him joining us as we prepare for the season ahead.”
