Zendejas, Schulte named to CONCACAF Champions Cup Best XI

The CONCACAF Champions Cup Best XI features two of the surprising snubs from the U.S. men’s national team’s June roster.

Alex Zendejas was named to the Best XI on Wednesday after reaching the tournament semifinals with Club America. Zendejas excelled for Club America, scoring five goals and adding two assists in eight Champions Cup appearances.

The 26-year-old’s impressive overall campaign for the Liga MX winners though did not earn him a spot in the USMNT’s June roster.

Patrick Schulte, who lifted MLS Cup last fall with the Columbus Crew, was also named to the Best XI. After excelling in MLS NEXT Pro, Schulte grabbed the No. 1 job last season and hasn’t looked back.

He made his senior USMNT debut last January against Slovenia.

Tournament Golden Boot winner Salomon Rondon (nine goals) was also chosen to the Best XI, as well as Columbus Crew trio Schulte, Yevhen Cheberko, and Diego Rossi. Schulte earned Goalkeeper of the Tournament honors after totaling 36 saves throughout the competition.

Pachuca’s Oussama Idrissi was one of the competition’s leading playmakers with six assists.

Pachuca won the competition after defeating Columbus 3-0 in the final last Saturday. Rondon scored twice while Miguel Emilio Rodriguez also found the back of the net.
