New name linked as Newcastle eye EURO 2024 defender set for summer move

According to reports in the Netherlands, Newcastle are one of four Premier League clubs showing interest in Feyenoord star Lutsharel Geertruida.

This comes from Dutch outlet AD, who report that Newcastle, Liverpool, Tottenham and West Ham are all keen on the versatile 23-year-old who can operate at right-back, centre-back and in midfield.

It’s believed Geertruida’s future won’t be sorted until after this summer’s Euros, where he will represent the Netherland, but he’s expected to find a move this summer now he’s entering the final 12 months of his contract at Feyenoord.

The powerful defender was close to joining RB Leipzig last summer for a fee in the region of £28m, but he opted to stay in Rotterdam, where he played alongside Newcastle United talent Yankuba Minteh over the 2023/24 season.

Based on his age, versatility and contract situation – which will naturally bring his price down if he fails to sign an extension – it’s easy to see why we’re showing an interest based on his performances in the Eredivisie.

Who knows if we’ll make a move, but he’s another right-sided centre-back that has been linked after Tosin Adarabioyo opted to join Chelsea instead. One to watch at the Euros, perhaps.
