Barcelona director Deco ‘grew tired’ of Xavi Hernandez – report

Barcelona’s decision to expel Xavi Hernandez as the head coach was a surprise to many, but as far as the board members were concerned, the decision was always coming.

During the course of Xavi’s spell at the club, the Spaniard had started losing synergy with many of Barcelona’s executives, including President Joan Laporta.

Now, a recent report from SPORT has revealed that Xavi’s relationship was sporting director Deco was also deteriorating during the end of his tenure.

Deco got tired of Xavi – report

While tensions always existed, the report suggests a deeper breakdown in trust between Xavi and sporting director Deco.

Despite a cordial relationship, disagreements arose over transfers. Deco, frustrated by perceived “insinuations” about signings and Xavi’s lack of consultation, grew weary.

The report adds that Mateu Alemany’s failed attempt to bring in Juan Foyth was the final straw, as Xavi had famously declined the signing at the time. Deco saw this as a sign of disrespect.

Deco was quick to take action, notably avoiding giving coaching staff to dictate the club’s transfer policy. While he initially accepted Xavi’s continued tenure due to Laporta’s decision, the Girona loss proved pivotal.

Deco’s lack of approval over Xavi eventually led to Barcelona sacking the Spaniard. In fact, it was Deco who gave Laporta the idea of hiring Hansi Flick while he also did not rule out the option of Rafa Marquez.

Deco to gain more power?

Barcelona are now looking to usher in a new era under the leadership of Hansi Flick. The German’s appointment marks a culture change at Barça, where coaching staff may have a limited role to play.

The report notably suggests that Barcelona’s new regime could see Deco enjoy more power when it comes to dictating transfer policies and negotiating with players.

Only time will tell if this shift…
