Henderson set to miss out on Euros selection

Jordan Henderson will not be included in England’s provisional squad for Euro 2024, according to a report in The Athletic.

Gareth Southgate will announce an expanded group for this summer’s tournament in Germany this afternoon, but Henderson is not expected to feature.

The former Liverpool captain has won 81 caps for the Three Lions but his place in Southgate’s plans has been in jeopardy ever since he opted to leave Anfield for Saudi Arabian side Al Ettifaq last summer.

He subsequently joined Ajax in January but failed to shine in the Eredivisie while also missing more than a month of action due to injury.

Southgate has plenty of options to replace Henderson with Manchester United youngster Kobbie Mainoo impressing on his first England start against Belgium in March and Conor Gallagher having a stand-out season with Chelsea.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is another alternative with the Liverpool right-back happy to step forward into midfield while the Athletic also report his club team-mate Curtis Jones will be included.

England will name a squad of around 30 players this afternoon that will be trimmed to 26 following the friendly against Iceland on June 7.

Other problem areas for England include left-back with Manchester United’s Luke Shaw likely to be named despite not currently being fit.

Sunday, June 16 – Serbia vs England (Gelsenkirchen, 8pm)

Thursday, June 20 – Denmark vs England (Frankfurt, 5pm)

Tuesday, June 25 – England vs Slovenia (Cologne, 8pm)

A reminder that the top two in each group, plus the four best third-placed teams, go through to the round of 16.
