May 20 – Juventus are the latest European giant to be looking for a new manager after sacking Massimiliano Allegri just two days after he led the side to the Italian Cup.
Juve beat Atalanta 1-0 in Rome but Allegri was sent off late on for ranting at match officials and, following an Italian Football Federation investigation, Juve confirmed he was no longer their boss.
Juventus Under-19 coach Paolo Montero will take charge of the senior team for the final two matches of the season having never coached a Serie A side.
Allegri lost his cool in stoppage time, ripping off his jacket before earning a red card for sarcastically applauding the referee. Juventus said in a statement that Allegri’s behaviour was not in line with its “values.”
“The firing follows certain behaviours during and after the Italian Cup final that the club deemed incompatible with the values of Juventus, and the behaviour that those who represent it should have,” the statement said.
Allegri had already been suspended for two Cup matches for his outburst and also fined €5,000 by the Serie A league judge.
Away from the Italian Cup, Juventus have had a disappointing season, falling to fourth place in Serie A and banned from European competition due to a false accounting case.
Allegri was in his second stint at Juve, having rejoined the club in July 2021. He was more successful in his first term at the Bianconeri, winning five straight Serie A titles from 2015-19 and finishing as Champions League runners-up twice in 2014-15 and 2016-17.
His only trophy since returning was the recent Italian Cup, which has now become his final match.
