Barcelona heavyweight not in the ‘mood’ to renew, summer exit not ruled out – report

Big decisions must be made in just over a month when Barcelona officially enter the territory of the transfer market.

With a squad to rebuild and not much space on the financial front, big sales are inevitable. Frenkie de Jong, on that front, is a player whose departure cannot be ruled out given his market value.

Renewal not close

According to an update from Mundo Deportivo, De Jong’s case at Barcelona is far from simple, especially given the history of his links away from the club.

The Spanish outlet relays that Barcelona are not opposed to renewing De Jong’s contract. However, they wish to do so with a cut in his salary to help with the club’s financial situation.

De Jong, however, does not appear to be in a good mood to renew his deal as it stands. After all, he was not happy with how the board tried to push him out of the club in the last two summers.

With the captain not showing eagerness to renew his deal, let alone on lowered wages, his continuity at the Catalan capital could well be in danger.

The bridges broken between him and the board, after all, are not ones that can be rebuilt easily.

Sale on the cards?

If De Jong does not renew his contract on the terms offered, Barcelona will look to sell the player this summer.

With the 1:1 situation on Financial Fair Play a few big sales away, the manoeuvre will help the board immensely in terms of creating space on the economic roster.

If indeed Barcelona hope to sign Manchester City star Bernardo Silva, the Dutchman’s sale would become non-negotiable as it is seen to be the only way to make the Portuguese star’s signing possible.

With Silva even willing to take a pay cut to join Xavi’s side, De Jong could well find himself extensively linked with a departure for the third time in as many seasons.
