Howe reveals plan to keep £20m man as player addresses future after Burnley win

Eddie Howe’s stance on Callum Wilson’s future couldn’t be clearer, with the Newcastle boss planning to do “everything” he can to keep him on Tyneside.

With the striker’s contract due to expire next summer, Howe was asked about his future after Saturday’s 4-1 win at Burnley. He said: “Of course I want him at the club next season. I will do everything I can to make that happen.”

Wilson received interest from AC Milan, Atletico Madrid and Chelsea in January, with recent reports suggesting Saudi clubs are also eyeing the 32-year-old; who became our second top scorer in Premier League history with another goal over the weekend.

Asked about his plans before getting on the team bus to leave Turf Moor, Wilson said: “The future? Finish the next four games. My first thought is finish the season strong and then try to get myself into the tournament in the summer, and then, I am contracted to Newcastle still so will be back in pre-season.”

The forward was then asked by reporters if there was an element of doubt heading into the summer, he replied: “Nah, nah, I guess, say what you want to say. Yeah.” A slightly unclear response, but that’s probably the reality of the situation.

If I had to guess, the club feel now is the time to cash in – he’s 32, will be worth nothing next summer if he leaves on a free and he’s had several injury issues again this season – while Howe is keen to keep given his loyalty to the striker and fear he’d cost too much to replace.
