Barcelona plan to assess young full-back duo in pre-season before deciding on roles

A report from Mundo Deportivo suggests that Barcelona’s young talents, Alex Valle and Julian Araujo, will join the team for pre-season training this summer. 

This opportunity will allow them to showcase their skills and make a case for why they should be part of the team.

Ultimately, their goal is to impress head coach Xavi Hernandez and secure a spot in the first-team squad for the upcoming season. 

The outlet suggests that the potential exit of Marcos Alonso and the uncertainty surrounding Joao Cancelo’s situation may lead Barcelona to explore options for full-backs in the upcoming summer transfer window. 

However, according to sources within the club, addressing this position is not their top priority mostly because they know there are a few players on loan who have made a case for themselves this season.

Joao Cancelo currently has one position covered but his continuity is in question largely because of his substandard performance during the second half of the season.

If Cancelo stays with the club, he is set to be the manager’s top choice for right-back in the upcoming season. 

This decision is logical since Alejandro Balde’s return from injury means Cancelo can move back to his natural position on the right, leaving left-back duties behind.

On the other hand, Araujo, currently on loan to Las Palmas, is another key part of the plan, coming back to Catalonia to serve as Cancelo’s backup on the right flank. This arrangement ensures depth and versatility in the team’s defence.

With Cancelo and Araujo handling the right side, it opens up new possibilities for the team’s formation. 

Furthermore, with Valle returning from loan, Xavi will have two options for both defensive positions, although much will depend on their performance…
