One 3/10, a few 4s, several 5s and two 6s – Newcastle player ratings vs Crystal Palace

A night to forget and a baffling display from Newcastle United, who never got going in a 2-0 defeat at Crystal Palace last night. Here come our marks out of 10 and comments.

Martin Dubravka – 5/10 – A few decent stops but let Mateta’s second go through his legs. By no means our worst player on the night.

Emil Krafth – 4/10 – Distribution was really poor, summed up by his sloppy clearance in the build up the Palace’s opener. Solid against Spurs but never settled here.

Fabian Schar – 5/10 – Was caught ball-watching for their first goal and struggled to progress the ball from defence like he normally does. Bumped up a mark due to his goal-saving block to deny Andersen early on.

Dan Burn – 4/10 – Since moving to the middle of the defence Burn has been more solid, but he felt off the pace here and looked uncomfortable on the ball. Got sucked in and spun for Mateta’s opener.

Jacob Murphy – 3/10 – Ineffective on and off the ball. A passenger in the game who never got close to Eze and didn’t offer a thing going forward. Looked lost in the game before being withdrawn just after the hour mark.

Sean Longstaff – 4/10 – Passenger at times and looked slow to react and lacked quality on the ball. Robbed of a penalty and did set Barnes clear with a goo early pass, but he lost possession poorly just before Palace’s second.

Elliot Anderson – 5/10 – Bags of effort but that was about it. He is not a wing back and was hampered by the system that served us so well against Spurs. Horses for courses, Eddie.

Bruno Guimaraes – 6/10 – The only player who could beat the Palace press and passing was crisper than his teammates’. Set up Isak with a lovely dinked through ball. Cut a frustrated figure at times and was largely overrun.

Anthony Gordon – 5/10 – Tried to get things going but very little came off for him. Chopped inside and had a late effort saved well by Henderson.

Alexander Isak – 5/10 – Threaded through a couple of times but…
