Barcelona in advanced talks to renew midfield mainstay’s contract at least until 2028

As we draw closer to the ending of the 2023/24 season, FC Barcelona are already shifting their focus towards squad-planning for the next campaign.

A crucial summer window awaits the Catalans heading into which only five players are considered ‘untouchable’ by the club, with offers likely to be heard for almost all other stars.

One of the non-transferable players for Barcelona happens to be midfield mainstay Pedri. The 21-year-old has endured another injury-riddled campaign, but remains a key cog in the team’s plans and is seen as an integral part of the project.

Talks advanced over Pedri’s contract renewal

As such, SPORT reports that Barcelona have advanced negotiations open with Pedri’s entourage over a new contract for the midfield prodigy.

Pedri’s current contract with Barça runs until the summer of 2026, but the club have promised the Spaniard a new and improved deal that would reflect his standing as a differential player within the squad.

Now, it is seen as a priority to secure his future and reward him with an improved contract and talks are already underway and in an advanced stage over an extension.

If everything goes forward smoothly, Barcelona plan on renewing Pedri’s contract at least until 2028 while fulfilling the promise of the upgrade in his wages.

Gavi also in the same boat

The report adds that Pedri’s good friend and midfield partner Gavi also finds himself in the same boat with Barcelona wanting to extend his contract as well.

However, things are moving at a slower rate as far as the La Masia graduate is concerned owing to the fact that he is currently injured and is still in recovery.

Meanwhile, Pau Cubarsi, another of the ‘untouchables’ will have his contract renewed while there is already a pact in place to extend Lamine Yamal’s deal until 2030 once he turns 18.
