Barcelona consider legal actions to force El Clasico replay after VAR controversy

Barcelona president Joan Laporta came out all guns blazing following the club’s recent defeat to Real Madrid.

Laporta openly called out VAR and how it is being implemented in La Liga, suggesting that there has been unfair treatment towards Barcelona.

Laporta particularly pointed out an incident that saw VAR disallow Lamine Yamal’s goal, even though the ball appeared to have crossed the line before Andriy Lunin pushed it out.

The lack of goalline technology in La Liga meant VAR had to make a decision and much to the surprise of Barça, the goal was annulled.

Disappointed by the VAR decision, Laporta demanded all the images and footage of the goal from Yamal and even expressed that he would push to replay the match if any wrongdoing was discovered.

Barcelona consider filing legal complaint

Just a few days after the defeat, Cadena SER now claims that Barcelona are considering filing a legal complaint, under the guidance of Joan Laporta.

Barcelona appear to be taking a page out of the Belgian Jupiler League’s book as a VAR error had led to the possibility of a replay between Anderlecht and Genk this season.

After being aggrieved by the VAR decisions, Genk asked for a replay and the Disciplinary Council of the Belgian Federation agreed.

Of course, months later, this same March, the Belgian Court of Arbitration for Sport accepted Anderlecht’s appeal and revoked the decision. 

Despite the replay not happening in that case, Barça want to use it as a precedent and are ready to take matters to the courts.

In fact, the Catalans want the intervention of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAD), which is the apex body for everything related to sports.

It appears Barcelona are anticipating the RFEF and the CTA to show a lack of cooperation in this matter. And as such they are ready to go to the TAD for resolution and are prepared to exhaust all options to find a…
