Newcastle closing in on replacement for Dan Ashworth – David Ornstein

The Athletic’s David Ornstein has revealed that Newcastle United’s search for Dan Ashworth’s replacement has reached an ‘advanced stage.’

With Ashworth on gardening leave and ready to join Man Utd when a compensation package is eventually agreed, Newcastle hired world-renowned consultants Odgers Berndtson to find a new sporting director at the start of March.

Six weeks later, Ornstein believes we are now close to securing a replacement after a host of possible candidates have been identified and interviewed.

Paul Mitchell – formerly at Monaco, Spurs and Southampton – has previously been described as the leading contender, but the likes of Paolo Maldini, Hugo Viana, Phil Giles, Tiago Pinto, Rui Pedro Braz and Tim Steidten have also been linked with the role.

Asked for an update in a recent Q&A for The Athletic, Ornstein said: “It’s at an advanced stage Chris, but not yet complete. The process is being led by a recruitment firm and no doubt there will be differing preferences across the ownership group.

“They will want to reach a consensus pretty soon and then it will be about trying to strike a deal for their chosen candidate and getting them in the building. If that happens before an agreement is reached with Man Utd on Ashworth, it will be interesting to see if their strong stance on him remains or softens.”

With plans stepping up ahead of a huge summer transfer window for the club, hopefully a top class appointment is announced soon.
