It’s been 17 months since Josh Sargent last featured for the U.S. men’s national team and after overcoming up and down spells at club level, as well as injuries, the American forward is hoping this summer marks his return.
Sargent is enjoying a stellar second half of the season with promotion-chasing Norwich City, leading the charge for David Wagner’s men. The Missouri native overcame a lengthy spell on the sidelines last fall to become one of the in-form strikers in the entire country.
Sargent’s 15 goals this season leads the Canaries squad, with 12 of those tallies coming in 2024. His second-half production has been crucial to Norwich City staying in the top-six race, with the Canaries currently hanging onto the final promotion playoff spot in England’s second-tier.
After missing the March USMNT window due to injury, Sargent is doing everything he can to be prepared for a potential inclusion in this summer’s Copa America roster.
“I’ll just keep working and doing what I’m doing,” Sargent said in an interview with Pink UN. “Obviously, I was very upset that I wasn’t able to join the guys in camp. I’ve just been dealing with this ankle that’s been lingering on for a while now. To be honest, having that little break seems to have done it a really good job, it’s feeling like it’s in a really good place at the moment.
“As long as I keep doing what I’m doing here at club level I feel like I deserve to be back with the team in the summer,” he added. “I always want to be with the national team, any time I can. Unfortunately due to injuries and whatnot, I just haven’t been able to get with the guys. It’s been a while, I’m playing really well and if I keep doing what I’m doing here, I feel like there’s no reason I shouldn’t be with them.”
