EXCLUSIVE: Alfie Harrison – Why I joined Newcastle, Eddie Howe influence and training with Man City stars

Newcastle United made no senior signings during the January transfer window, but a mid-season move for Alfie Harrison was quite the coup.

The 18-year-old was one of the standout players in Man City’s academy, bagging nine goals and four assists in his opening nine games of the U18 Premier League season. Not only that, he was handed a chance to train with their first team by Pep Guardiola, mixing it with the likes of Erling Haaland, Rodri and Ruben Dias.

However, the highly-rated attacking midfielder made the switch to Tyneside and now has plans to break into Eddie Howe’s first team over the coming years.

Speaking exclusively to NUFCBlog, he revealed what convinced him to make the move. “It’s a massive club and the fans are so passionate about the game. The direct, attacking football under Eddie Howe also suits the way I play. I always want to play forward and create.”

Discussing what he’s like as a player and his goals at Newcastle, he added: “I’m very passionate about the game and always look to create. My dream is to establish myself in the first team and make a name for myself here.”

I then asked if there was any particular Premier League player he’d like to model his game on. Alfie’s answer? “Phil Foden!” As a fellow Man City graduate and English attacking midfielder, it just makes sense.

The former City talent has trained with the England star before, with Pep Guardiola handing him the chance to mix it with the senior squad in November last year. On the experience gained, he told us: “I benefited massively. I was playing with top players, taking bits from their game and adding it to mine.”

Harrison then discussed Eddie Howe and life on Tyneside. “He’s a top manager. He does everything he can to get the best out of his players, which is what every player wants.

“I’m loving it up here. The people are quality and I love the fact they are all football mad!”

The teenager is already featuring regularly in our U21 set up…
