Catarina Macario assists once as Chelsea stays top of WSL standings

Chelsea jumped back to top spot of the WSL on Wednesday with Catarina Macario playing a key role in the Blues’ latest victory.

Macario assisted once as Chelsea defeated Aston Villa 3-0, leapfrogging Manchester City to first place. The U.S. women’s national team attacker started and played 69 minutes atop Emma Hayes’ attack.

After Aggie Beever-Jones broke the deadlock for Chelsea in the 18th minute and Maika Hamano added to the Blues lead 20 minutes later, Macario set up Kadeisha Buchanan for her first club goal.

Macario’s corner kick was bundled home by Buchanan, giving Chelsea a 3-0 lead that they would not let slip away. The 24-year-old watched the final 20+ minutes from the sidelines, but knew she played her part as Chelsea stayed in front of Man City at least until the weekend.

Macario now has one league goal and two assists in four appearances after returning from a serious knee injury.

Both Chelsea and Hayes will hope for continued production from Macario as the campaign continues.

Chelsea next faces Barcelona on April 20 in the first leg of their W Champions League semifinal tie.
