Stat attack: Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s penalty record for Barcelona ahead of PSG clash

Barcelona’s highly anticipated clash with PSG is drawing nearer, with merely a few hours remaining before the Catalan giants take to the field.

Although Barça possesses a one-goal advantage, the Parisians will be vying to make life difficult for Barcelona from the get-go and complete the comeback.

The possibility of penalty shootouts occurring cannot be ruled out either if the game ends in a stalemate.

In that event, all eyes will be on Marc-Andre ter Stegen in goal, who is no stranger to facing
decisive penalties in high-stakes matches.

A look at Ter Stegen’s penalty record in the UCL with Barcelona

Throughout his tenure at FC Barcelona, Ter Stegen has faced a total of eleven penalties in the Champions League, managing to thwart four of them, resulting in a success rate of 36.3%.

The first of these saves came against Sergio Aguero in the 2014/15 season, a pivotal moment in Barcelona’s 1-0 victory.

In the subsequent 2015/16 campaign, he denied a penalty from Dzeko, although Barcelona’s dominant performance rendered it inconsequential in a 6-1 triumph.

Another notable save came against Moussa Dembele during a 7-0 thrashing of Celtic. Finally, his most recent penalty save occurred against Marco Reus in a goalless draw against Borussia Dortmund during the 2019/20 season.

Ter Stegen’s record in other competitions

While he has stepped up to the plate in Champions League games, Ter Stegen has had a hard time getting the better of opponents domestically.

Out of nineteen penalties, he has only saved two (10.5%) when it comes to La Liga.

While he was unable to save either of the two penalties in the Europa League, Ter Stegen saved one of the five penalties he faced in the Copa del Rey.

The German international has stopped one penalty out of five in the UEFA Super Cup while saving one in three in the Spanish Super Cup.
