Records are designed to be broken. Merely numbers on paper, they often offer nothing but an impetus to players to strive and better the statistics.
There are, however, records that define greatness which at a glance give the impression that they are engraved in stone. As the greatest ever to grace the field, Lionel Messi has no dearth of such statement records.
Over a decade ago
Messi’s brilliance was a constant spectacle at Barcelona and the Catalans can only be considered blessed to have enjoyed his loyalty for decades.
If one turns the clock back exactly 11 years ago – to 2013 – one would find Lionel Messi on the covers of global media for writing one such historic record that may perhaps never be broken.
On this day in 2013, 30th March, the Argentine talisman became the first player in history to have scored against each of the other 19 La Liga sides in 19 successive games.

A unique streak
Messi’s unreal run that season started with successive braces against Mallorca and Real Zaragoza.
He followed them up with a stunning four consecutive braces against Levante, Athletic Club, Real Betis and Atletico Madrid.
The next four league games, against Real Valladolid, Espanyol, Malaga and Real Sociedad saw the player net once each before he slammed four goals against Osasuna.
A goal each against Valencia, Getafe, Sevilla, Real Madrid, Deportivo and Celta Vigo and braces against Rayo Vallecano and Granada helped Messi seal the historic record.
The Argentine icon’s season was eventually shortened by injury, but Messi scored 60 goals for Barcelona across all competitions that season and established himself as the team’s most vital player.
The seasons that came, needless to say, only fortified his status as the best player to have ever kicked a ball.
