Dest, Tillman, Pepi suffer Champions League elimination with PSV

PSV’s quest to stay in this season’s UEFA Champions League came to a disappointing ending on Wednesday night in Dortmund.

Peter Bosz’s squad suffered elimination in the Round of 16 after falling 2-0 to Borussia Dortmund in second-leg action. U.S. men’s national team players Sergino Dest and Malik Tillman started and played 90 minutes apiece while forward Ricardo Pepi played eight minutes off the bench.

Jadon Sancho and Marco Reus both scored for the Bundesliga hosts as Borussia Dortmund advanced into the final eight of the annual competition.

Sancho’s long-range strike in the third minute propelled Borussia Dortmund into a 2-1 aggregate advantage. It marked the English international’s second goal since joining from Manchester United during the January Transfer Window.

Despite PSV’s best efforts, Swiss international Gregor Kobel made seven saves to preserve the clean sheet for Borussia Dortmund. Reus sealed the Black and Yellow’s advancement by scoring in second-half stoppage time for a 3-1 aggregate scoreline.

Dest delivered a solid defensive shift at left back, but Tillman struggled to create opportunities in the final third. Pepi won two aerial duels in his limited cameo.

PSV’s lone opportunity to lift a trophy this season will come in Eredivisie play, where it sits 10 points atop of the league table. The Dutch leaders have nine matches remaining on their schedule and will next host FC Twente on March 17 ahead of the FIFA international break.
