Eddie Howe has defended Lewis Hall’s lack of game time, explaining how it’s been a “season of growth” for the teenager after moving away from home at a young age.
The 19-year-old has only managed 12 minutes of football since the turn of the year, raising concerns around his performances behind the scenes and long-term future at the club.
However, Howe insists he is a big part of his plans and all set to sign permanently this summer, with the boss revealing that fans – and the player himself – must be patient while he settles in and develops his game in training.
It’s interesting that Howe mentions his move away from home at the age of 18 and the “challenges that come with that”, suggesting that could be a factor in his early struggles? For all the talk on social media, it’s clear Howe has real belief in his game, with the internal view of Hall’s season very different to the external one we see online.
“I’m preparing long-term for him to be here,” Howe said. “I’m delighted with that because he has many qualities we are looking for.
“Sometimes, and I know it’s a rare commodity these days, we just need some patience. We just need to wait to develop players. There’s no magic wand, but time and good work on the training pitch. Players develop at different speeds, but we’re delighted with the progress he’s made.
“When you look at someone of that age moving away from home — regardless of the fact they’re a footballer — you can’t underestimate the challenges that come with that. He’s handled himself really well and it’s been a season of growth for him although the external view would not necessarily have seen that.
“We have seen that internally so it’s been a really powerful, positive year for him. A lot of work has been put into him and I do believe in him long-term.”
