St James’ Park rumours put to Eddie Howe as Toon boss reveals stance on potential move

During today’s press conference, Eddie Howe was asked about reports linking Newcastle with a move away from St James’ Park if expanding the current stadium isn’t possible.

Howe made his preference clear, believing staying put, increasing the capacity and making it “even better for our supporters” was his ideal outcome.

He believes the position of the stadium within the city “sucks you in”, describing its city-centre location as “unique.” He’s clearly reluctant to move away, but The Telegraph did report earlier this week that rebuilding on Leazes Park or the current Metro Radio Arena site have been earmarked as options if a feasibility study shows we can not expand sufficiently at St James’.

When asked about rumours around St James’ Park and what the stadium means to say, Howe said – “I feel a connection with the stadium of course. I’m looking at the stadium as I do when I’m driving around Newcastle and it draws you in, it sucks you in.

“That’s the beauty, I think, of where the stadium is situated, it is never out of your eyeline or out of your thoughts which is such a unique thing. I don’t think there is another stadium like it.

“Personally I’d love to stay and develop what is there to make it even better for our supporters. But of course you have to understand the needs of everybody and take in all that information, but that [to stay] would be my wish.”
