Eddie Howe set for double boost ahead of huge week for Newcastle United – Report

After a terrible display at Arsenal on Saturday night, Newcastle enter a huge week in our season with some more good news on the injury front.

The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards reports that Elliot Anderson and Matt Targett will return to training this week, handing Eddie Howe another injury boost ahead of tomorrow’s FA Cup clash at Blackburn and Saturday’s home game with Wolves.

This comes after Alexander Isak and Joe Willock returned to action over the weekend and follows news that Nick Pope is ahead of schedule and hoping to be back next month following shoulder surgery.

Anderson has been out for a number of months having suffered a stress fracture in his back, but it will be good to get his energy back in a midfield that has been sorely lacking a spark lately.

He also adds some depth and versatility to Newcastle’s attack, giving is another option who can play in midfield, our wide or in a No 10 role. It’ll also hand Howe more rotation options, which have often been lacking late in games and limited our ‘plan B.’

As for Targett, he suffered a hamstring injury against Manchester United in the league cup back in November and has been missing ever since.

With Dan Burn struggling at left back as of late and Tino Livramento more suited to the right side, this could be a big opportunity for Targett to prove his worth ahead of a big summer. I doubt he’ll get game time, but it finally feels like we’re getting the bulk of our injured players back to fitness.

Some more encouraging news on the injury front: Elliot Anderson will return to training this week along with Matt Targett. Willock and isak will both be a lot better for run out at the weekend. Light at the end of the tunnel #NUFC https://t.co/pIcCKUAnYf
