There is no question that Frenkie de Jong has been one of Barcelona’s top performers under the leadership of Xavi Hernandez.
But due to the player’s high valuation, he has continued to be linked with a move away from the club. This coming summer will be no exception, with rumours already started flowing in over the midfielder’s future.
In his latest Twitch stream, Gerard Romero has offered a comprehensive update on the future of Frenkie de Jong, outlining two possible scenarios for the midfielder.
Scenario 1: Renew on a lower wage
If Frenkie de Jong wants to remain at Barcelona, he will have to settle for a lower wage next season.
The Dutchman is among the highest-paid players in the Barcelona squad and perhaps deservedly so, given his excellent performances.
However, as Barça continue to struggle with an inflated salary mass, lowering De Jong’s wage could be crucial if they are to bring in new talents in the coming summer.
As has been reported earlier and corroborated by Romero, Barcelona have sent a contract offer to the Netherlands international and are waiting on a response from the player.

Scenario 2: Leave Barcelona
Romero adds that if De Jong does not want to renew his contract, he would be free to leave Barcelona.
However, even if the club want to force through a sale this summer, De Jong might oppose the idea. That means we might witness a repeat of 2021, when the player was closely linked with a move to Manchester United, but refused to leave Barcelona.
De Jong’s current deal at the club does not expire until 2026. As such, the midfielder may end up remaining at the club for the next two years and then leave on a free transfer.
This could serve as a major blow for Barcelona, given the fact that De Jong can easily fetch them over €70 million in the transfer market.
