Chelsea won last night, but Mauricio Pochettino as under no illusions about the performance overall.
Things improved in the second period, but the first half was as bad an attacking showing as we’ve seen all season. The Blues racked up 420 passes without a single shot on target. It was utterly painful to watch.
After the game, Pochettino admitted it was “flat” and not up to his standards. He and his coaches clearly weren’t happy with what they saw:
“First-half, we were so disappointed. The performance wasn’t great. We were so slow and we were so flat and very disappointed.
“We all feel very disappointed with the first 45 minutes but in the second-half, we started the game how we should start from the first minute. But in the end, I think we deserved the victory.”
We’re glad he sees what we’re saying – but what’s worrying is that he doesn’t seem able to do anything about it. He clearly is doing his best to get the group revved up before they go out to play, so what’s the problem?
We can’t believe that he’s not able to motivate them – they all seem to like him and continue to believe in him. Is it just a question of nerves? They are able to step it up a gear. We saw it in the second half last night, and in the whole game against Aston Villa last week.
So why can’t we see that every game? It’s a puzzle Pochettino needs to solve, and soon. If we play like we did in the first half against Palace when we play City on Saturday, we’ll be torn apart.
