Barcelona not ruling out loan-to-buy formula to sign Man City defender in the summer

Barcelona had to work hard to secure the signing of Joao Cancelo on loan from Manchester City during the summer transfer window last year.

The deal took until late on the deadline day, but was completed, with the Blaugrana signing the full-back on a season-long loan deal with no buy option.

Since his arrival, Cancelo has proven to be an asset for Barcelona, and is a permanent fixture in the starting XI under Xavi when fit and available. He has made 26 appearances in all competitions, scoring three and assisting four goals.

Barcelona want to keep Cancelo for longer

It has already been well-established that Barcelona wish to keep Cancelo at the club beyond the ongoing season.

As per reports earlier today, it was suggested that the Catalans would be willing to pay a transfer fee worth around €15-20 million to sign the right-back permanently.

But a fresh report from Mundo Deportivo’s Gabriel Sans claims that Barcelona are not ruling out the possibility of signing Cancelo on another loan deal, but with a purchase clause this time out.

As per the report, Manchester City are absolutely clear that they do not want Cancelo back at the club in the summer, even though he has a contract with the club until 2027.

The 29-year-old had a falling-out with manager Pep Guardiola which led to his exit, first to Bayern Munich (in January 2023 on loan) before he ended up at Barça last summer.

Now, things have not changed and City wish to not have Cancelo back at the club irrespective of how he is doing on his loan stint.

Given the situation, there are likely to be other suitors who would table offers for Cancelo in the summer, which might appeal more to the Cityzens.

However, what works in Barcelona’s favour is that the 29-year-old full-back wants to sign for the Catalans and will hold out for them, like he did last summer.
