Haji Wright relishing role as winger in Coventry City attack

Haji Wright mainly played as a lead forward during his two successful seasons in Turkey. He also did so during his solo campaign in Denmark. Now he is relishing a new role with Coventry City in the English Football League Championship.

Wright has played as a winger in Mark Robins’ squad this season, a role which has seen the 25-year-old flourish during his debut Championship campaign. He leads the Sky Blues with nine goals and six assists across 31 combined appearances, helping Coventry City fight for promotion yet again and also reach the fifth round of the FA Cup.

After a short spell on the sidelines to start 2024, Wright netted his first goal of the new year last week against Sheffield Wednesday. While many players might be against a move to a new position, Wright has certainly risen to the challenge and it’s certainly showing for the promotion contenders.

Whether or not Wright’s international stock takes a boost from his impressive season remains to be seen, but the veteran forward’s main focus is on continuing his production for the Sky Blues.

“It’s nothing new to me,” Wright said Friday in a club interview. “I’ve played it a lot. I have played in the winger role at both youth team level and senior level during my career. I am used to it and it feels good to play there.

“There is a settling in period for me here in general but I now feel comfortable being here, and being in Coventry,” he added.

Coventry City hosts Millwall on Sunday before continuing February’s schedule with four additional matches.
