Eddie Howe hits out at blue card proposal – Nail on the head?

As revealed by The Telegraph yesterday, a new blue card is set to be introduced in football as part of sin-bin trials which could be rolled out next season, starting in the FA Cup.

The blue card will give the referee the power to send a player off for 10 minutes and could have huge impacts on Newcastle going forward as a team that typically likes to play on the edge at times.

A blue card will be awarded for cynical fouls or for showings of dissent, and picking g up either two blue cards or a blue and a yellow card would result in the player having to miss the rest of the game.

Eddie Howe was asked about this during Friday’s press conference and it’s fair to say he’s not a fan, fearing it would “add more confusion” to the game:

“I’m not a big fan to be honest. That’s what yellow cards are for.

“The current system works well but just needs to be applied right.

“A blue card would just add more confusion, in my opinion.”

Trials have already taken place in youth football and the IFAB have come to the decisions that they should now be trialled in professional football starting from next season.

This could be bad news for players like Bruno Guimaraes or Joelinton who absolutely love a cynical foul, so it will be interesting to see how it impacts every team in the Premier League should it used.
