Barcelona open to selling €80 million-rated captain this summer, have doubts over his performances

Barcelona are in dire need of change, and the required change is set to arrive in the summer. Xavi’s announcement of his departure last month was not one many saw coming, and a mass exodus in June is thus anticipated.

The Catalans have tried several manoeuvres to get past their financial crisis in recent seasons. After many levers, some successful and others not so much, they are back to square one. A few big departures are a must.

The Dutch option

Frenkie de Jong, in recent days, has returned to the headlines as a possible candidate to leave in June. Despite being one of the team’s captains and most important players, there are other factors that bring his continuity into question.

According to reports from Alex Pintanel now, the Dutchman’s departure this summer is looking increasingly likely.

The club have doubts over his performances compared to the time they signed him and now see reason to sell him.

Indeed, De Jong is one of Barcelona’s most fundamental pieces on the field. However, the administration likely sees a big gap between his salary, which is the highest in the squad, and the output on the field.

Player open to an exit

While Barcelona are under pressure to complete big sales by June 30th, the player’s stance on his future is equally critical when negotiating a big exit. The Spanish source adds on the same topic, relaying that De Jong is no longer opposed to leaving Barcelona.

The player is disappointed with the Catalans club and sees that the expectations with which he signed for the club have not been met. After all, they are far from contenders for the UEFA Champions League which remains his biggest dream.

At €24.8 million per season, his salary being waived off Barcelona’s wage list would go a long way in opening the doors to new arrivals. After all, the Blaugrana are stacked with resources in midfield and can do with additions in other positions.
