It is no secret that Barcelona were determined to shore up their ranks in midfield during the January transfer window.
The club were closely linked with a move for Girona starlet Aleix Garcia and Swedish whizkid Lucas Bergvall but were unable to deal a seal for either of these stars.
But these are not the only players Barcelona were keeping an eye on, during the January transfer window.
Barcelona wanted to sign Dion Lopy
According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona were keen on the services of Dion Lopy of Almeria during the winter market.
A defensive midfielder by trade, Lopy has emerged as a star at Almeria following his €6.5 million move from Stade Reims in the summer.
After securing the services of Vitor Roque, coupled with the contract registrations of Gavi and Alejandro Balde, Barça realised they had to go after a cost-effective option in the market.

Lopy was identified as the ideal candidate, given his early success at Almeria, coupled with his crafty presence in the middle of the park.
Why the move didn’t work out
The report notes that there were two main reasons behind Barcelona’s failure to sign Dion Lopy in January.
The most obvious one was Almeria’s willingness to keep hold of the player. Having only signed Lopy last summer, the club did not want to sell the player immediately.
Another reason was competition. In fact, Barcelona’s main competitor – Eintracht Frankfurt, had even offered €15 million for the services of Lopy.
But that was rejected by Almeria. Seeing the valuation surge, Barça ultimately decided to opt out of the chase and settled for Andreas Christensen as their temporary solution in the number six position.
