Martin Dubravka’s agent has confirmed that the goalkeeper is considering his future at St James’ Park, refusing to rule out a move away this summer.
Speaking to iNews and Sport.SK, Zika admitted a January move would “not make much sense”, as he’s currently playing in Nick Pope’s absence and any sale would be blocked. However, he’s revealed that the Slovakian will weigh up his options at the end of the season, where he’ll have just 12 months remaining on his contract.
Zika suggests that he will assess his situation after this summer’s Euros, hinting that offers could come his way if he performs well in Germany but refusing to rule out a new deal at Newcastle.
“I dare say that he will finish this season in Newcastle. I personally think, and we talked about it with Martin, that now he has excellent ‘timing’ for everything.”
“He’s playing, he’s getting better and better in every game and then the European Championships will come and he’ll only have a year left on his contract.
“If he plays well in the Euros in Germany, he can get into an excellent position. I can imagine that Newcastle will offer him a contract extension for a year or two.
“In England, goalkeepers mature like wine and their loyalty is viewed very positively. However, we wouldn’t rule out that he will want to look somewhere else.”
It’s a tough one for the club. Nick Pope will more than likely take back the No 1 jersey when he returns from a shoulder injury, but we have back-up stoppers Loris Karius and Mark Gillespie likely to depart this summer when their contracts expire.
Dubravka is a solid option to have in reserve and we’d ideally like to keep him I’d imagine, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see big changes in the goalkeeping department this summer, with a younger option likely to arrive.
